This is, of course, based on the familiar Shaker tune of the same name. Often, I hear music I really like, but expect it to develop in a way that never materializes. Sometimes, my view of the musical possibilities is strong enough that I want to explore the ideas it contains for myself. That’s what happened here. When finished, I’m usually at a loss for what to call the result. It’s somewhat more than an “arrangement”, something less than an original composition. “Arrangement” is probably the least misleading.
Such are the petty dilemmas of the composer.
